"In the fifth season [of Star Trek: The Next Generation] viewers will see more of shipboard life [including] gay crew members in day-to-day circumstances." - Gene Roddenberry, to The Advocate, 1991

The above quote is a promise made by the creator of Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry, shortly before his death. This promise was never fulfilled.

We, the undersigned, request that the director, producers and writers of the new Star Trek films include a romantic relationship between main characters of the same sex in the execution of Star Trek sequels. This relationship could be formed by any number of character combinations as might develop naturally in the course of the story. Preferably, this development would occur between members of the primary cast of characters on the Enterprise.

If you, the director, producers and writers, allow such relationships to be shown as was intended for the original Star Trek productions, we believe that it would carry forward the legacy that Gene Roddenberry left to us, the fans: the legacy of a future in which all genders and races are equal and accepted. The acknowledgment of the deep love and friendship between members of the Enterprise crew in a mainstream film, regardless of gender, would encourage the abolition of prejudice and homophobia and open the door to further acceptance of all types of sexuality.

We recognize the fiscal implications of such a momentous step. However, such a relationship, if accepted in the mainstream films, will bring financial returns from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans groups as well as Star Trek fans. The resurrection of the franchise has come at the perfect time for it to lead the way again, as it did in the 1960s, and break new ground in terms of gender and sexual equality.

As a long standing fan of Star Trek, it is my belief that a great deal of the continuing success of the show has been its ability to bring strong commentary and acceptence to issues dealing with the ideals of social equality, magnanimity, justice, truth, and the power of love over hate. In the 2009 film, we saw the destructive power of hatred and misunderstanding. As I sign this petition, I stand by the power of love that has been displayed as canon in the previous series, and ask that it not be subsumed to the power of marketing, fear of censure, or other fears that stand in the way of social justice.

It's time that the obvious relationship between Kirk and Spock was officially acknowledged. Yes, it would be a risk, but so much of what the original series did was a risk. Star Trek has always been about breaking down prejudice. Homophobia is one of the most important prejudice plaguing our time. Because of the homophobia of the 60s one of the most amazing relationships ever on television or in movies never got properly explored or even admitted to. That shouldn't happen all over again.

Yes, yes and please yes. I find it ridicuous that omni-species relationships have representation in the Star Trek universe but same-sex relationships don't. Here lies a chance to reach out to a whole new demographic fan base, one that is growing bigger and bolder every day. Not to mention the already existing fans who're crying out for Star Trek to keep going boldly, not stick with the tried and true. If not now, when? I say go fo it.

Star Trek has always been a source and support of social progress. Let us continue this legacy by expanding innovative relationships; by not only acknowledging the attraction between Kirk and Spock, but celebrating in it. This would be the ideal and honorable way to truly to pay homage to the inspirational and ground-breaking series that has captured the minds and hearts of millions. Star Trek, as it has in the past, should be a leader in breaking the social barriers, in venturing into a world that isn't stigmatized by one's sexuality, but by true acceptance of an individual as a person. Let us all live long and prosper.
As a great man once said, 'Be the change you wish to see in the world.' Star Trek can be a part of that change, should be apart of that change.

I'm sure it's already been stated in this petition that Star Trek has always been a series to push the envelope for equality. And, yes, great strides have already been made for the whole lot of us homosexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, metrosexuals, omnisexuals, etcsexuals. But I don't believe there's been a mainstream movie to date that has homosexual characters but has not built the plot around that aspect of their lives. So, we're daring you to do that. Are you up to that challenge? Because I bet you anything Gene Roddenberry would be.

At the moment I'm almost certain the next Star Trek productions will completely ignore the homosexual subtext of the original series, considering homophobic times we live in. However I still believe in a possibility of the new creators being brave enough to continue the legacy of Star Trek: showing equality of every race, gender and sexual orientation, portraying a world without close-minded prejudices.

Uhura finally got her first name acknowledged in official canon; now it's time for Kirk/Spock to be acknowledged. It's past time that Star Trek officially identify character(s) as something other than heterosexual. Kirk and Spock, the first couple of slash fanfiction, deserve that honor. It doesn't have to be over-the-top. Mulder and Scully danced around each other for YEARS before their relationship became so obviously canon that the NoRomos could no longer deny it. Aside from being the first slash pairing, Captain Kirk and Mister Spock's strong friendship can be felt in most any episode of the original series. The frequent touches and glances between them that hint at something deeper in their relationship were imperative to many moments of tension in a crises and hilarity and witty banter with the ease of their friendship. The loss of this momentous connection between the characters would be extremely detrimental to the success of the reboot verse. Please hear our plea.

<< We [the interveiwers] tell Gene [Roddenberry] something of our recent interveiw with Bill [Shatner] and Leonard [Nimoy] - touching on the Kirk-Spock relationship, and Nimoy's feeling that Kirk was essential to Spock's life:

"I know you've told us you designed that relationship as 'Two halves which come together to make a whole'. Is that how you still see it?"

[Roddenberry]: "Oh yes. As I've said, I definitely designed it as a love relationship. I think that's what we're all about - love, the effort to reach out to each other. I think that's a lovely thing. Also, dramatically, I designed Kirk and Spock to complete each other - and in fact, the Kirk, Spock McCoy triad to be the dramatic embodiment of the parts of one person: logic, emotion, and the balance between them. You cannot have an internal monolog on the screen, so that is a way of personifying it, getting it out where it can be seen - that internal debate which we all have within. AND I designed Kirk and Spock, as I told you, as dream images of myself, the two halves. But in terms of the characters, yes. That closeness... absolutely."

There is also this:

"There's a great deal of writing in the Star Trek movement which compares the relationship between Alexander and Hephaistion* to the relationship between Kirk and Spock - focusing on the closeness of the friendship, the feeling that they would die for one another..."

[Roddenberry]: "Yes, there's certainly some of that - certainly with love overtones. Deep love. The only difference being, the Greek ideal - we never suggested in the series - physical love between the two. But it's the - we certainly had the feeling that the affection was sufficient for that, if that were the particular style of the 23rd century."

Here and now, in 2009, In my state, I can marry my girlfriend if I so desire and be open and proud of who I am and who I love. It is a small step, with so few states and countries acknowledging such a basic human right, but considering the fact that there were still anti-sodomy laws in several states until 2003 (NH's sodomy laws were repealed in 1975), I think that is a mighty bit of progress in a short period of time. One would hope that by the 23rd century we would not have moved backwards in such arenas, particularly in a world that has to deal with alien species and they're practises and morals.
T'hy'la gets thrown about a lot in fandom and fanfiction, but just because it has become widely used in those settings does not make it any less beautiful of a concept. Friend-brother-lover, not used lightly and so much deeper than can really be expressed in some ways, it is the embodiment of the characters Gene Roddenberry created in Kirk and Spock; had it not been the 1960's when they came into being, I fully believe that the romance between them would have been more overt.
I'm being rather verbose, so -

tl;dr - this gay female wants to see a realistic and bold gay relationship on screen between soul-mates.

Think about it, you guys can go down in history in the same way that Gene Roddenberry did. Don't think so much about the money, think about making a difference. Besides, there are tons of open minded people who are more than willing to accept this. Any *true* fan of the series would gladly welcome this with open arms.

So I say boldly go into a new era of acceptance and love regardless of preexisting social standards, in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry!

"Star Trek" helped break down the color barrier on television, let's break down this next wall. It's about blasting down the barrier. Homophobia is something that isn't touched upon in the major media, and is something that can do a lot for a series if a 'gay couple' is included, or even a character who demonstrates bisexuality, homosexuality, or a transexual. I think it's about time that Hollywood got on the bandwagon and joined those of us who are willing to lend a hand to creating a better future.

Star Trek has been an example of what we can strive for, why not show that we are capable of creating a better future for everyone? Let's see a little more of the K/S love that's been around for a very long time.

Star Trek has always meant something beyond a starship traveling through space. It has always been a message of hope, and a powerful one at that. Roddenberry's vision gave everyone a hope that the future would hold a greater place of dignity and respect for them. So far, this gift of hope has been promised and then denied the GLBT community. If the message of Star Trek is truly to be resurrected for another generation in these films, then this is where that message should begin.

Homophobia is the only civil rights issue the Star Trek series have never addressed. ANY acknowledgment at all that gay people exist in the future, and are accepted as would be logical for a ethical organization such as star-fleet would be much more realistic to the nature of the show, and the creators vision, as well as continuing Star Trek's reputation as a trailblazer for civil rights issues, and taking on controversial issues without fear.

Now's a perfect time to support relationships of all kinds, and who better to represent the LGBT side than Kirk and Spock? Their deep bond with each other has been acknowledged for decades. I will be only one of many to be happy when a romantic relationship (not even necessarily sexual) is acknowledged between the two in the newer movies. Some people may find that foolish and scorn this sentiment, but Kirk/Spock has inspired many people with its long-standing loyalty and affection, despite consisting of merely fictional characters.

Ursula \"Cat\", Baltimore, MD, USA, 15, Female
I haven't even looked at half of the comments and the all of what I wanted to say has been said. Just to recap, this show "boldly goes where no man has gone before" and should follow that tradition, as on-show interracial relationships were ground-breaking then, homosexual relationships are ground-breaking now, and they should take that next step; this step would definitely draw in more fans and strengthen more fanships than scare away existing and potential fans; Kirk/Spock forever; and I think that is it.

I promised myself I wouldn't repeat all the truth stated in these comments, but here's my two cents. Star Trek not only pioneered SLASH, but it broke down many of the social barriers of the 60s, and made an honest effort to impact society. Gene Roddenberry was a genius, and his show is legend.

Star Trek is still a power house today, and still has what it takes to make an impact, to inspire people to try to make a difference. Bringing some light onto the long hidden love between James T. Kirk and Spock by openly exposing the problem that is homophobia would only continue to show Star Trek for what it is: A show/movie that is about trying to make a difference, going without fear into the unknown, and doing what is right, no matter how hard it may be at the time.

Though I agree that we will never see Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto kiss on screen, at least give some long over due acknowledgement to the obvious love and connection between Kirk and Spock. It doesn't matter how, just that it is done, and that the show which broke down walls in the 60s continues to do so now, when we as a society obviously need the help. I personally am a fan of nuTrek Spirk, but TOS will always come first. In my opinion, 'Thy'la' was created for a reason, people. Figure it out.

To put it bluntly, I say screw the church, politicians, air headed beauty pagent winners, and any bigots that say what Kirk and Spock portray is wrong. What they portray is love, in any form you wish to perceive it. Familial, platonic, or romantic, take your pick. I was always taught that love, in any form, is never wrong. Illogical, in the words of everyone's favorite Vulcan? Sure, undoubtably. What human emotion isn't? But wrong? Think of the messages Star Trek put through in their shows, think how many lives and opinions the show changed for the better. Does that seem wrong to you?

I completely support this petition. There is nothing wrong with love, whether it be between a man and a woman, or a captain and his Vulcan. So go for it! Keep Gene's vision of a more open and accepting Star Trek alive! It had the first interracial kiss, so why not take this next step?

I want to live in a world where it is not crazy and I am not an obsessed fan for wanting to see a romantic relationship between Kirk and Spock as text and not subtext. Gay or bisexual people are real and not subtext.
The more I think about TOS and the movies about the TOS crew, the more I see Kirk's and Spock's relationship as a romantic one, shown in the the only way it wa possible at the time.
The more I hear about background information and interviews and other various sources the more I think that this has to be true.
Even if it was't true then, or at least not the only truth that was applied, I still think that in the world we live in today it should be possible to be true.

I want to live in a world where if it is plausible to see romantic interest between Spock and Uhura in the original source, it is possible to recognize that there are so many more indications for the same between Kirk and Spock.

We are not crazy. We created this petition because we believe in our cause, but also because we believe that the spirit of Star Trek is to "go where no one has gone before" to show us what a beter future is like and that it IS possible. To take the risk and to "jump without looking", exept we're looking to you, to make that dream a reality.
Thanks

I ask that you please follow the intentions of G.R., in showing that the future, real or not, will be a place of equality and hope. That people will be able to live their lives to the fullest possible happiness, without fear. Look, there's a reason you had to make the first film about the evolution of Kirk and Spock's relationship; it would have had none of the credibility and significantly less impact than what was actually achieved. Their relationship is integral to the fabric of this series. Others have suggested that you at least have some portrayal of GLBTs, but I have no interest in anyone but Kirk and Spock being acknowledged in this way. I'm not interested in tokenism, as that is a violation of what Star Trek is meant to stand for. It would also be a slap in the face to all of those who wholeheartedly believe in the subtext of the original series, to explicitly state the same-sex preference of a more minor character or characters and still keep Kirk/Spock subtextual. However, it would also be cowardly to not include a portrayal of homosexuality in the Trek franchise when this barrier probably should have been broken a long time ago. So I truly believe making Kirk and Spock's relationship, specifically, more than subtextual is the most effective, most honest and most admirable way to go about it. The reason people have no confidence that Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto would ever share a kiss on-screen is because of precedent and conservative studios, two things Star Trek has never let stand in its way.

I recently read an analysis of Star Trek: the Original Series discussing the underlying messages present in each episode. There were some important and groundbreaking ideas as far as the '60s were concerned and I think that should continue. Hating people on the basis of race, gender, religion OR sexuality is reprehensible. If a mainstream change like this petition is proposing could encourage equality all around the board, then we should pursue it.

We should honor Gene Roddenberry and live up to his promise of having gay relationships in Star Trek. Also, Kirk/Spock basically created slash. Pushing the envelope is a time honored tradition and the very spirit of science fiction. Through Star Trek and others of that genre generations have been inspired to change the world. Star Trek took a bold step breaking the race barrier with the first interracial kiss on television. As a a mix-raced person (black and white), this is a very important thing - who knows if I would even exist without that episode. As someone who fully supports the rights of LGBT people, I would love to see what changes would come about by this movement coming into fruition.

NO FEAR.
TAKE A CHANCE.
MAKE YOUR MARK.
Don't let ILLOGICAL hate and fear strangle a story that has so much potential. That is NOT what TREK is about, never has been.
You have another shot at what Roddenberry couldn't do over 40 years ago. Let's show the world what progress we've REALLY made in that time.
IF A FILM LIKE TREK XII BROKE GROUND IN LGBT ISSUES, IT WOULD BE REMEMBERED FAR BEYOND SCI FI, HOLLYWOOD, OR TREK FANS' MEMORIES.
It would make a lasting cultural impact.

Surely the success of 'Torchwood' and other shows which feature homosexual partners shows that this genre is not only welcomed, but wanted.

This is the most legitimate gay pairing in the history of television. Even their creator thought so. It's time to bring them out of the closet.

Thank you...

The writers of TOS seemed to have a lot of fun throwing in not so subtle subtext between Kirk and Spock. I bet they were trying to see how much they could slip through the sensors... Thus began the birth of the slash culture! xD

When it comes to things like fan-based relationships, I try to keep in mind what the original creators would have wanted for their characters.

Having said that, Roddenberry made it pretty clear that Kirk and Spock were meant to be together in any and every way that they possibly could be, and he's the authority. Now that the times are changing, it's high time Kirk and Spock were given the chance to be public about it, isn't it?

If the relationship between Kirk, and Spock is represented, and treated as a non-issue in the future movies, that would do so much to influence the views of people on LGBTQ people. While there has been more representation recently of LBBTQ people, we have always been portrayed as an oddity, angst-ing over out unnaturalness, or else as comic relief. If you were to show two men who love each other, with no angst, no social stigma-- if they were portrayed as being normal--, how ground-breaking that would be! Star Trek is a franchise that has always inspired change, and pushed the boundaries of its time. And today, we need those boundaries pushed, and expanded again. We need someone willing to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Star Trek has always been a series that was not afraid to step out of our cultures comfort zone and, I quote, "to boldly go where no one has gone before." Seeing as the issue of gay rights and representation is a current event, I fully believe that the director, writers, producers, etc should at least give some consideration to the matter. It would only be logical to do so, borrowing the Vulcan ideal. I fully hope that those reading this petition will be able to take the next step in Star Trek's evolution not only for the fans but for the memory of the great Gene Roddenberry.

Star Trek has always been about breaking new ground, both as a theme for the show and how the show viewed social issues. It seems only logical that in order to truly continue with the spirit of Star Trek, it must continue to do so. Otherwise it's just a sci-fi action movie with a nostalgia trip. It's about time the movie industry explores a gay or lesbian relationship between main characters. It would be nice to see such a relationship occur in a movie where the main focus is NOT on the relationship; where that relationship is just a natural progression of the plot and it's characters. Any example of this would be fantastic (and deeply appreciated, I assure you), but Gene Roddenberry himself said Kirk and Spock loved each other enough that a romantic relationship was not unthinkable, it just wasn't the time. I think the time is now; if not now, then when? Star Trek has always had a strong stance on equality before, and I think it's time you take that stance again.

The entire point of Star Trek was to explore the variations and differences between people and to show that even people of different races, species, sexualities, and cultural backgrounds could be united into one force. The creators of the original series did not shy away from Spock and Kirk's relationship, nor did they bend to the heteronormative views of their generation. I say that we follow in their footsteps and "boldly go where" other producers and writers have not dared. Spock and Kirk have always shared a special bond in the show. They are T'hy'la (friends, brothers, lovers) despite their different backgrounds and species. I suggest that we honor that bond and give their relationship the screen time it deserves in the next movie.

Two of the key elements of the original Star Trek were breaking social boundaries while opening the viewer's mind to tolerance/understanding, and the strong friendship, loyalty, and love between Kirk and Spock. That was the whole message of the third Trek film.

I wouldn't have signed this petition if I thought it was all about fans demanding for the main characters to become a couple; and while I'm sure the Kirk and Spock dynamic will be touched upon, all I ask is that it not be condensed to a good partnership/friendship because it was so much more than that. They are two parts to one soul, that cannot exist without the other.

Star Trek was from the start about breaking taboos - from a woman as 2IC to a black person being a valued member of the crew, and treated with the respect and dignity afforded to any other person. That there has been no LGBT character in Trek, apart from the two lesbian kisses in DS9 (which were rather added as titillation), is astounding. However, I would like to add that it should not be a big deal. If a character is LGBT, it should be considered normal and unremarkable by the crew - this was what made the barrier breaking of TOS profound. It wasn't just that there was a black woman on the bridge, it was that there was a black woman on the bridge, and nobody considered it to be remarkable. That is how it should be if there were to be an LGBT character in a forthcoming Trek movie/series - there, but not made a fuss about.

That is the way prejudices are broken - by people just seeing it as normal.

The pairing of Kirk and Spock is something beautiful and needs to be acknowledged. It's perfect.

Lindy, Ohio, 21, Female
To see Kirk/Spock relationship brought to future movies that could be made is really the only way to go. Their bond was so strong that even in a time of prejudice people could see the signs of a relationship between the two.

The Hollywood industry needs to realize this and give the audience what it wants, deserves and to help Gene Roddenberry's original ideas be brought to fruition. This is an era that is right on the edge of LGBT finally being excepted in regular society and media. To see the first real slash pairing brought to us now would be a huge step.

And I think the actors need to be given a little more credit too. More films have been coming out with actors and actresses, both small and big time, that have been taking on roles with canon and subtext slashing. These series have also been shown to be more popular to the audience.

While I do not know as that much about Chris Pine, I don't think Zachary Quintos would really put in a fight towards this. He has been in clips where he portrayed a bisexual, as well as have engaged in a kiss with another man. While these were done with a bit of humor, he still did them. Also in early interviews of Heroes, he has mentioned several times his liking of Sylinder. This is the term referred to the pairing of his character and that of another male on the show.

So I think we need to give the actors a little more credit. I wish the best of luck to this petition and hope to see that even if if has no effect, they will realize how strong the movement of acceptance is coming.

From the start of its run, Star Trek has lead the way in ideas of acceptance and equality. In the 60s Star Trek broke barriers using media. Let's help keep Gene Roddenberry's goals and dreams alive, and make a difference for people of all sexual orientations.

Erin Newman-Renwick, Canada, 24, Female
In a perfect world Kirk and Spock could have been written as a couple from the get-go in the 60's. And who knows? Perhaps, had the social climate in North America in the decade been different, they might have been. Roddenberry himself certainly suggested it wasn't impossible or unlikely.

Kathryn Newman-Renwick, Canada, 22, Male
In future space, how do we expect that this kind of love hasn't evolved into an everyday thing? Lets take a step into showing the world how much love you can have out there in space. It's been more than hinted at that Kirk and Spock have a deep connection with each other. Let it blossom on screen!

Evie, Vancouver, Canada, 30, Female
Trek has already tackled so many social taboos. Is there any franchise more appropriate to bring a positive gay hero or couple to the screen than this one? Carry on with Roddenberry's progressive vision for the future, and make this a reality. It's time.

As a proud, self-identified lesbian and a proud, self-identified geek, I have a great love and respect for Star Trek and what it has given to these past few generations- and is still giving- in terms of a vision of a future of acceptance, where honor, love and unity will eventually defeat cruelty, hate, and selfishness. It gave us heroes to believe in, role models to strive to emulate. It gave us women with brains and heart during a time when Feminism had barely begun being talked about. It gave us racial acceptance, with the first interracial kiss on US television, not to mention having a main character who represented the blending of two separate races, and constantly dealt with this issue of identity. Now, it is time for Star Trek to step up to the plate and continue its history of portraying for us that golden future; to ask the tough questions and to not shrink back from the issues at hand. The fans are true, and the recent revival should tell you just how much the public's hearts and minds still resonate with the nostalgia of that future. We need it; we need the future now, and I come here on behalf of both the fans who believe in what Star Trek stood for and as an active soldier fighting for the future of my brothers, sisters, friends, lovers, parents, and children who every day look for their own Kirk or Spock or Uhura to look up to, and see none.

Do what you know is right. Be pioneers not of space but of social change. Go where none have gone before. Many are looking to you to once again be the the standard-bearer for the future.

Kirk out.

Since there is so much homophobia in the world I think maybe it's time to do a same-sex kiss. The on-screen kiss with Kirk in Uhura in Star Trek TOS made everyone smarten up and stop being so racist. I think maybe an onscreen same sex kiss will do the same effect and finally homosexual people will finally get their rights as well as black people finally did.

Please hear our Plea and break up Uhura and Spock, and put Spock and Kirk together, for they are the true lovers, and nothing can end their love.
So stop looking up the wrong whole, and take a look at your heart, it's located below your brain, and head. (If you are Vulcan, it is located under your right arm, to the side of a human heart).

Star Trek, from its conception, has broken racial and gender barriers in our society. I would like to see it continue this tradition by supporting sexual equality in upcoming movies or tv series. In addition, I feel like the Kirk/Spock relationship was a metaphor for the GLBT couples in the sixties and seventies. Like the K/S relationship, they had to hide their sexuality to maintain social acceptance. You have a unique opportunity to help the GLBT community gain mainstream acceptance by showcasing a passionate and healthy homosexual relationship in upcoming movies. Also, older conservatives who might decide not to see the movie based upon such content would most likely not see the movie anyway. Teenagers and young adults make up the large majority of moviegoers, and what is more enticing to teenagers and young adults that something new and slightly scandalous. The more people talk about the movies, the more people will be curious and want to watch them.

This would be amazing! As a supporter of the LGBT, I support this with every fibre of my being. The 'New Star Trek' should continue on the legacy of what was meant to be in 'The Original Series' Star Trek (im sure that everyone has noticed the subtle and not-so-subtle sub-text during the show. Need I bring up the 'Shore Leave' episodes 'Back Rub' scene?)

Even though I am of the younger audience (I have been in love with Star Trek since I was ten and watched 'Search for Spock'. After watching most of the episodes, that the ship is SUPER important, yet Kirk sacrifices it to save Spock. NOTE THIS DECISION! >:O There must have been SOMETHING brewing if Jim sacrificed his ship!), I believe they should go with Roddenberry's original Idea

It's time to BOLDLY go where man SHOULD have gone before!

xxxxxxxx, Melbourne, Australia, 15, Male
I don't understand how anyone could have the RIGHT to carry on Gene Roddenberry's legacy, when they completely turn a blind eye to his wishes.
He has created Kirk and Spock originally to be a same-gender couple (if you can do an interracial kiss and different-SPECIES couples, why not same-sex relationships?)

I have been in love with TOS's Star Trek Kirk-Spock relationship, and even more so since I have read this Analyzation of the TOS series episodes and Kirk/Spocks characters/realtionship : http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5105759/1/AnalyzationCommentary_of_TOS_for_KS

An Analyzation made by an ACTRESS and a WRITER! She has analyzed everything to the smallest details, and her fans have to! For all of you homophobic's in the world, how can you be okay with interracial couples, if not with inter-gender? How can you deny the love between to people, even if they are same-sex? Kirk and Spock had to hide their 'blossoming relationship', because this inspirational show would have been cancelled within three days of its airing if they didn't

Roddenberry knew that, in the 60's, you could only push to far before something breaks. Back then, and even NOW, will same-sex couples go to far for people around the world. But for everyone out there, how can you not realize that people all over the world have signed this petition?

Star Trek has always provided a keen and biting social commentary and a platform to express new ideas, which then frequently become mainstream. TOS was famous for featuring the first on-screen mixed-race kiss, involving the characters Kirk and Uhura.
I firmly believe that in the future love between two individuals will be regarded as a wonderous thing, regardless of race, creed or sex. The first two have been championed, but the last is still largely taboo. I believe that Star Trek would be an ideal platform to explore that concept, and to help people accept it. Let us once again boldly go.

Kirk/Spock was what Star Trek was made for. There's a reason it was the first slash pairing. At least people did begin to realize all of the subtext led to the realization that they are, in fact, a true relationship. There is so much evidence to support this pairing, and yet people stil ldeny it, simply because they don't want to consider their heroes as 'faggots.' It is truly horrific that we have yet to find a time in which all love is accepted. It's... disgusting... that people are still homophobic, when so much larger issues are going on in the world.

This project, if it does succeed, can very much so help change the minds of people everywhere. Long time fans may scorn it, the box office number may not be as big, but it will get. The message. Through. If people want to continue to be ignorant, that's too bad, but at least you would be shoving it in their face to where they could not ignore it. SEE is a fantastic idea and I completely and utterly support it.

Just as Bill Cosby was able to show that middle-class African-American families who love each other still exist and are awesome back in the 80s, I believe you as writers and producers have the same opportunity to give LGBTQ life a nod and show it wouldn't be universe-shattering, just another part of everyday life. Star Trek was made to "Boldly go where no one has gone before." They did a good job with it in the past, but we have to keep moving forward. I think Star Trek is the best thing ever for connecting people-- even if your not a fan, almost every one on the planet knows what Star Trek is. Using it to send a message, one that desperately needs to be said, would only be--logical.

This is a no brainer, Star Trek is constantly bombarding watchers with moral lessons and concepts, just because its a sensitive issue (not really, if you look hard enough) in this country doesnt mean you should just leave out this bit about the two main characters. I want Kirk/Spock. its part of the Story. Gene Roddenberry himself said so, several times! this is like piracy, they just have to do SOMETHING.

Star Trek, especially the Original Series, is full of people who represent specific cultures or genders or whatever. They're steroyotypes, but only because they were subtly (or not-so subtly) trying to send the message of equality and necessity. In the 60's, it was more focused one women and African Americans but in this age, when homosexuality is such a huge topic, it only makes sense that we be represented in a show that has been a forerunner for promoting equal rights for as long as Star Trek has. I say good luck to this petition and I support it wholeheartedly and look forward to the day when I can watch my favorite show and see Gene Roddenberry's wish finally come true.

This could really be revolutionary. It could be the beginning of equality for people of all sexual orientations! In the end it's up to you, but in the future, and ideal future where people who are Gay Lesbian, Bi- or transexual will be accepted, you could be known as pioneers of that future. Please.

It was clearly Gene Roddenberry's intention to challenge social prejudices. The original series would have been cancelled but for a fan petition, and it went on to become a franchise that has made you good money for over 40 years. Star Trek has examined race, gender equality, politics, religion. Sexual orientation is conspicuous in its absence and it's hurting the brand. Trust the fans again on this, and your franchise will be profitable for another 40 years.

the new Star Trek movie is a rethinking of the original, with a younger cast. the libral thinking youth of toady want this, want to see acceptence of LGBTs and the breaking down of old barriers. please pull through for the openmided adults who follow Trek and all the new fans to be gained. Star Trek has always been forward thinking, best not to let it get behind the current times by side-stepping what so many of this generation have come to already accept

Elizabeth, Ontario, Canada, 19, Female
Gene Roddenbery himself said that the love between Kirk and Spock was sufficient for a physical relationship, and that he 'definitely designed it as a love relationship'. Homophobia is still one of the strongest prejudices plaguing the world, and carrying Gene's dream forward would be revolutionary.

I think that it would be a dishonor to Gene Roddenberry and to the original cast and series of Star Trek if this wasn't included in the new films. Since it was integrated in the original series it seems odd to not have it in the new movies.

Hate based on a person's sexuality is highly illogical. A franchise as iconic and famous such as Star Trek representing the LGBT community with LGBT characters would not only be a momentous step towards equality for all, but would also bring in a new group of well-paying fans. The future is supposed to be a bright, inspiring place- it's time to represent full equality there, so that it may soon become a reality. Star Trek has changed the world- it's time to add another accomplishment to it's long-list of contributions, and realize Gene Roddenberry's promise.

Admittedly, I haven't been a Star Trek fan very long. However, when I watched The Original Series, I was shocked at the social norms the show fought against and how they broke so many boundaries. I was amazed some of those episodes were even aired in the 1960's. To discover that the franchise hasn't done anything to address the issue of homophobia is a shock, as well as a let-down. At this point in time, I think it is more important than ever that Star Trek once again pushes the boundaries of societal prejudice and addresses the issue of homophobia in the mainstream media.

Star Trek was a pioneer in media recognition of ethnic diversity, gender equality, and other pressing social issues of its day. These issues, while still existent, are nowhere near as urgent as they were in the 1960s. Take a real stand. I, along with many others, would be happy to see any homosexual relationships in a Star Trek movie. But I also think that Gene Roddenberry would take this chance to explore the love between Kirk and Spock- a relationship he obviously thought of in the '60s but couldn't air on television. I believe the world is ready now for Kirk and Spock to come out. Honor the memory of Gene Roddenberry and make Star Trek important again.

The gay subtext in the original series gave birth to the world of homosexual romantic literature. By the time Star Trek becomes a reality, I fully hope humanity will have grown up. But that's not going to happen unless we give it a kick in the pants. If we refrained from undertaking a noble cause just because it made some people uncomfortable, we'd still be in the Dark Ages.

The majority of people would prefer to see a man lie with a man than with a dog. This "human-dog" (interspecies) relationship has been breached many times on Star Trek. It's high time for another social barrier to be demolished.

xxxxxxxx, Olympia, 17, Male
Gene Roddenberry was a wonderful, intelligent man that was wiser than his time. He did things to shake up the film industry no one dared to back in his day; having a woman that was black on the bridge, a Russian around the Cold War era, and an Asian after Vietnam. He did his best to break prejudices and I believe he'd appreciate it if we continued to do so in his honor. I know that may seem a little melodramatic, but I deeply respect Gene Roddenberry for everything he has contributed to pop culture, and everything that he would have if he'd been allowed. Way back at the start when he was pitching Star Trek to the TV producers, he wanted there to be a female second in command. They told him people weren't ready for it. True, I'm not really complaining, because I adore Spock, and the show never would have been the same without him, but that is not the point. The point is that he truly went boldly where no man had gone before, and I think it only right to carry on that tradition.

Breanna, Arizona, 24, Female
What amazes me is that the franchise/series have made it known on countless occasions that the future is beyond any form of bigotry, prejudice and inequality. No matter who you are, where you come from, the color of your skin or your choice of beliefs, you were accepted and hatred related to things such as racism was a thing of the past. And while I do believe that in the universes of this series, there are homosexuals, they've never been brought to light to be seen by the general public as -regular people-. Why has there not been at least one regular character who identifies with a different lifestyle? While I think their sexuality should not render them as "special," as they are just like all people, straight or otherwise, I think it would be nice if they were brought forward not as gay people, but people who happen to be gay and can do just the same as any straight man or woman. I recognize myself as heterosexual, and have met some very delightful LGBT people. Ultimately, what matters is the character, not what they identify themselves as, but it'd be nice to see that they're like any other person, doing things everybody does and not some strange, well, alien concept we dance around. There's only so many forms of media, movies and shows, that handle gay characters as plots-of-the-week, showing them in a tragic light by having them live miserably, abused, or suffering from HIV/AIDS or in a comedic light, where they're stereotyped to Hell. Star Trek, why don't you present a GLBT character who is not a oneshot story, a creature to be pitied or a walking stereotype, and show the world a gay man, woman or transgender/sexual can be a regular human.

Inclusion of a same-sex relationship in the next Star Trek movie would be nothing but true to the spirit of Star Trek, especially considering the original series of the sixties. In its time, that series was nigh on revolutionary in its ideas. It was a groundbreaker for popularizing many new concepts and ideas among the general public. The "spectacle" of Star Trek XI was magnificent in its own right, and incredibly enjoyable and well-done. However, it's important to remember that the original series became one of the most popular and loved shows of its kind not through its special effects, but through its ideas. Let us continue in this Star Trek tradition of breaking barriers and forging a path into the new world.
