Hi! the old forum had a thing asking about other books with LGBT characters, if you know any, just post them here.

Tamora Pierce has a book called BloodHound with a gay relationship, one character crossdresses and identifes as transexual.

Mercedes Lackey has... I think, 3 lesbian characters in her Arrows of the Queen series, a mention or two in By the Sword, at least one same sex relationship in her Gryphon series, a couple in the Mage Storms trilogy and the Owl... trilogy and the Last Herald Mage focuses on a gay Character.

Those are the ones of the top of my head, but I haven't read many actual books in a while.

EDIT: I think Anne Mccaffrey may have also had a few mentions of it, I think the blue riders or maybe green were generally flown by browns? brown riders are all males and the green/blue riders are mostly male or something, I'll reread the books at some point this holidays and find out.

Hm. I think Laurell K. Hamilton has some LGBT characters in her books as well... and it's kind of done in a rather casual way. I don't know if you'd like the way it was presented though... makes it seem as if LGBT is limited to the more darker circles of society, or whatever you call it. Vampire Hunter Anita Blake. XD

Lisa Papademetriu wrote a book called M or F? that has a few gay characters, and generally has a positive attitude towards them.

the Master and Commander series has a couple (the two main characters could almost be considered in a relationship), but, since this is circa 1800, the behaviour isn't exactly accepted, but Jack turns a blind eye towards it on his ship....

Tamora Pierce also outed another of her characters as lesbian in her book Will of the Empress and of course, there's always Dumbledore. XD

I remember that: Daja was in a relationship with one of the Empress' maidservants. It's a shame that didn't work out. I think there's someone else...my books are packed up, else I'd check.
Umm...there's a manga/comic called Steady Beat where the main character finds out her sister's a lesbian, and of course there's Legal Drug (the boss of the drugstore? the skinny dude with the glasses? he's dating the big guy with the shades).(I suck at remembering names.)
There's also a book called Boy 2 Girl whose author I can't remember, wherein the main character goes to school dressed as a girl, and one of the friends he makes (who definintly thinks he's a chick) ends up having a crush on him. Poor girl's name starts with a Z....

Marion Zimmer Bradley's "Darkover" series. There are quite a few gay and lesbian couples. Interesting concepts of sexuality.

I posted this on FFnet the other day, but it deserves a place here.

Swung past the library really quickly today, and picked up a list of gay and lesbian fiction authors. about 166 all up, I dont know what genres they write in, but it does make this job a lot easier.

Rob Thurman has an, erm, pansexual (tis a lame pun) character called Robin Goodfellows, or Rob Fellows as his current alias is, in her Cal Leandros series. As of the fourth book, Robin (a semi-immortal, or at the very least long-lived Puck) has settled down with Ishiah (a Peri, also assumed to be long lived at the very least).

Robin isn't quite the main character (those would be Cal and his brother Niko), but he is an important character to both brothers and the plot itself. In fact, Robin is one of the VERY FEW people Cal considers important. And if you've read the series, you'd know how big of a deal that is. :)

Oops, reading over the lists again, it occurs to me that all the writers on the 'gay fiction' list are male, and all the ones on the 'lesbian fiction' list are female, It is very, very possible that I actually have a list of authors by orientation.

Hmmm, that's... pretty interesting. xD

(Rob Thurman is a woman, by the way, 'cause I don't think I mentioned that. ^^; I'll see about looking through my collection/memory and see which novels/series have any LGBT characters. )

I recently read Havemercy by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett. If you're a Harry Potter fan, you may know Jaida Jones as LadyJaida, one of the authors of The Shoebox Project. It's an awesome fantasy book that features a gay romance that is kind of cheesy, but sweet.

I am a huuuuge Jaida fan (Go Shoebox!) but I have yet to order Havemercy. Mostly because I'm such a horrible procrastinator, and I kinda like to wait until the paperback is available...Oh well. Soon!

There's Jack Harkness, who, as John Barrowman put it, will "anything with a hole".

Is this exclusive to only books, or tv as well?

Okay, that's EXACTLY what my tv question was about! :)

So we've got the adorable Ianto/Jack in Torchwood.

The fandom's up in arms. I find it greatly amusing.

There was also brief mention of Ricky/Jake in Doctor Who, during Series 2.

Pierce's Protector of the Small series also has mentions of one homosexual couple. Of course, it's only said in passing as Kel's looking at the guy's dead body.

Blood Hound has several gay prostitutes too... If I remember correctly.

Nearly all of CLAMP's series have some form of LGBT character. Except maybe Chobits.

I mean in Wish, the demon and the devil characters have obviously had a relationship at some point. In Tokyo Babylon, there's constant flirting between Subaru and the vet guy [Subaru's twin sister whole-heartedly approves].

And then there's Card Captor Sakura. Those of you who just saw the kids TV series don't know what you're missing. There's a one-sided lesbian relationship going on between Sakura and her best friend. Li is obviously bi [he has crushes on both Sakura and her brother's best friend]. Sakura's brother also has a bit of a thing for his best friend. And the brother's friend alternate evil self chooses to take female form [and regularly throws herself at the brother, literally].

If we're branching into manga/anime, I can name a bunch of series where people's sexualities are vague at best. For example, I'm pretty sure the Naruto fanbase has reached a universal consensus by this point that Sai is gay.

DAzebras

Are we branching out into other current series as well that aren't sci-fi/fantasy? Because if we are, you could include 13 [Remy Hadley] from House, who is very openly bisexual.

Also, this one dos fall within our genre, Megan Fox is coming out with a new movie with her portraying a human devouring monster who is quite equal opportunity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jennifer%27s_Body that's a craptastic summary if I ever saw one.

Mikkiness

Why not. I'm still trying to find some LGBT books at my library, but I'm not having as much luck as I thought I would, so branching out into other genres might help.

And that movie looks really creepy btw.

As the moderator of the forum, I'll say it's fine to talk about different genres.

However, I can't really be of use to you, Mikkiness, since I get my slash fix from BL manga or fanfiction. :/

The whole yes/no/maybe of Xena/Gabriel in Xena: Warrior Princess. I wasn't an avid follower, but from what I saw it...seemed pretty probable/obvious to me. Fair certain they kissed in that one episode. Been yonks since I saw it though.

Yeah they sure did kiss and were kind of a couple ever since til the end of the show I think. I haven't seen it in forever either.

Here are a few to get you started. Most/all of these are about gay/bi men ('cause I'm a straight woman who likes to read about men who like men).

Scifi/Fantasy (books in print):
Hero- Perry Moore
The Nightrunner series- Lynn Flewelling
Swordspoint-Ellen Kushner
The Last Herald Mage trilogy- Mercedes Lackey
Kirith Kirin- Jim Grimsley

Horror:
Drawing Blood- Poppy Brite

Scifi/Fantasy Original fiction online (free stuff!):

The God Eaters- Jesse Hajicek http://chartreuse.studiowhippingboy.com/g_e_contents.html
This is also available in print but can be read here for free.

All of Amasour's fiction
http://www.amasour.com/
Lots to read here and it's all wonderfully good.

Gay Movies

Shelter- starring Trevor Wright and Brad Rowe

The Donald Strachey Mysteries- Staring Chad Allen and Sebastian Spence
These are prettycampy (especially the first one) but they are fun to watch and they do get better as the series goes on.

Big Eden- Staring Arye Gross and Eric Schweig
I love, love, love this movie!

Well if we're talking about tv too, then what about the Buffyverse?
I always though Willow and Tara were an adorable couple. I think for me, seeing Willow/Tara portrayed positively while I was at a young age was a great help.
Oh, and then there's Spike. Probably the strangest mix of masculine and feminine ever to be seen. I mean, dying his hair, painting his nails, wearing a woman's coat and being dramatically in love seems sorta feminine to me. AND :D there's Spike's little comment in AtS S5 about that one time he and Angel got together...!
SPOILER in white text (Buffy S8)---> woo and then there's Buffy's experimentation in Buffy S8, very brave of Joss. *applause*
Seriously, Joss is Boss when it comes to equal representations.

love to you all!

For the Poppy Z. Brite category I'm pretty sure all of her books can be counted as having gay characters in them, or at least gay moments.

Drawing Blood: The two main characters are obviously in a relationship by the time the book ends.
Lost Souls: Ghost and Steve share a kiss, (there are quite a few gay moments in this book as well as the kiss)
Soul Kitchen(and all of the sequels): have a gay relationship in them, the two main characters are obviously partners.
Exquisite Corpse: There's a failed gay relationship, the main characters are pretty much all gay. (or serial killers or sociopaths)

Those are all of her books that I've read, and Wormwood, and Are You Loathsome Tonight?: her books of short stories, all have a gay relationship in there somewhere. I highly recommend her books for fans of horror.

And while she doesn't really keep up with her horror-writing anymore, she keeps the gay characters. Which I absolutely adore/worship about her. XD

She is my absolute favorite author!!! I really hope she'll come out with some new books soon! Sadly, I don't own all of her books as, alas, some of them are out of print, and I don't have the best luck with used bookstores, and I'm not allowed to buy things from online. *pouts*

Sorry for the whining and it's good to find a fellow fan!!! ;)

Alan Moore has been known to write LGBT characters into his comic books, but they don't usually take part as the main characters, only as the back ground characters. But their relationships are written in a way that make them feel real and believable, I enjoy reading about them and speculating about them.

But I do have a feeling that Alan Moore doesn't really like women to much from some of his comics I read. But that's what makes them more believable and enjoyable in my eyes.

I just remembered that in the wonderful, brilliant, hearstopping, CANCELLED (gar :() Kings, the King's son is gay. He is feature prominetley, and is one of the 7 or 8 characters in every episode. There is controversy over him being gay, and (slight spoiler) after ignoring his love for a while, then spending one night with him before going back to ignoring him, said love commits suicide. It's one of the side stories. Sucks it got cancelled, I really liked the entire series, and Jack (Played by Sebastion Stan) was my favourite character.

oh and if anyone reads manga, i would suggest Loveless, Gravitation, OurKingdom, From Up Above, and FAKE. but only cuz those are the ones ive read so far. theyre not scifi (i dont really read much scifi except ST...) but From Up Above could be considered fantasy i suppose. the other i just enjoy cuz its boyxboy lovin of the visual kind, though not graphic. :)

As moderator of the forum, I approve discussion of LGBT series that are not of Sci-fi or Fantasy genres.

About manga, Loveless is pretty much fantasy. I haven't read a lot of BL series, but I like one volume mangas like Only the Ring Finger Knows and Not Enough Time, neither of which are scifi/fantasy. The series Hands Off! includes psychics though, if that counts. And one of my all-time favorites is Hybrid Child, which qualifies for sci-fi, methinks.
