View Full Version : Star Trek XI viewing party... Kinda.

I was just on the IRC forum with Pirate College Graduate, and she had the fun idea of having a viewing party for the new Star Trek. Once Star Trek XI comes out, we should all somehow get on the forum and chat about it while watching it at home. Of course, it's not out until November, and it's kind of hard to be on internet chat when you have no laptop and to also be watching. But I thought it sounded like fun. Anyone else think so? Or have any ideas on how this could work? :)

Sounds fun :)
Also, I know not everyone CAN get the TOS/TNG etc episodes (due to country restrictions) but that's another idea. Was thinking about book rec's too.

Yeah. The only three problems I see are
1)not everyone can buy the dvd immediatley. So it might be a few weeks after the release
2) Time zones. I'm fairly certain that people in different time zones wouldn't enjoy staying up until 2 to watch a movie, no matter how awesome said movie is
and 3)How do we all talk while watching? We'd need to brainstorm. People with laptops could just be watching wherever their tv is, but people with desktops would face a problem with that. Unless people bought a blue-ray three disk, giving people a digital copy. Then they could watch it on their ipod while being on a computer...
Just some thoughts. But I think it would be a lot of fun discussing the movie in real time.
Maybe have a few times for different time zones? Also, if you can't get the DVD right away...there are ways.
And a TOS party would own, too. <3

I think it would be more prudent to hold off such a viewing party till the weekend. November 17th is a Tuesday, and most people are going to school/work in the morning. Even if everyone did manage to wrestle a copy at midnight, it's going to be bad times for the few hours of sleep we get.
As for people with desktops, just watch the silly DVD on the computer. To be honest, it's easier to keep track of a chat and a movie while they're on the same screen, so to speak.

There are places online where you can watch the movie, too. Good ol' Chinese pirate sites. Not the best of quality, admittedly, but they still work.

I would be all for this! :D We should totally do it. It's always fun to experience a great movie with others so you can squee about all the good parts! (teh slash parts, what?) ;)

I downloaded a Torrent of it, but it would be much easier if we waited for the DVD release date. That way we could play the DVD at the exact same time and be able to be in sync with each other. Sounds like a great idea!

Hm. Yeah, people do have obligations outside of SEE, and espicially out of SEE fun things. It all depends. And I did think of playing the dvd in the computer. Hm. Does everyone have a dvd drive?I will probably have one by November. And I've totally made use of pirated movies. It's super fun to watch Star Trek on the PS3. We have a pretty good sized tv, so it's almost like owning it. :)

I could probably do it. Plan on buying the DVD when it comes out anyways. And I have a laptop.

Sounds like a plan :). I think what may be easier for people is to simply wait for December for the holiday breaks. We've clearly all seen this movie a bajillion times already and will avidly watch it over and over once out on DVD. But if we have some time off for holiday purposes, then we can more easily plan something since time zones/school/work/etc. will not be as hampering (hopefully).
It can be a big chatting event to start off the new year ;).

Vacations and holidays come into play then. Most people should have a fall break, also before a winter one.
I think it's plannable on a weekend. Surely around two hours maximum shouldn't dent lives too hard. It'd be a nice study break, as well. I know I could probably use one around then.

it may be tough for me to arrange, but we had a major response for the last big meeting (the non-emergency one) and that lasted forever, instead of a couple of hours, so maybe about that time, one weekend in late november? I think my exam leave starts on the 11th, and the last is second of december, so I have quite a few free days. and if we plan this now, people should be able to arrange their schedules around it.

I am definitely in, as long as it's not on a hockey night. :D

I'll be in my dorm room that weekend, dvd in my laptop. We could all hold discussion, rewind and analyze parts, and just fangirl (or boy) in general. Thanks for posting the thread Mandiranda!

You're welcome! n_n I will have to hord away my family's copy from my sister when it comes out, but if it's sometime in December or late November I don't think it will be that big of a problem... It should be fun discussing and analyzing and being like "omg, , LENSFLARE!".
And Pirate, who is that in your avatar??? It's funny. :)

You know, I had a thought. We don't only have to have these viewing parties with nuTrek. We could rummage up some of the older movies, or make a list of a few episodes to sit down with.
And Mandiranda, I think Pirate's avatar is George Kirk (Jim's dad).

Ope. It changed... When did that happen? It was someone making a funny face. But, anyways, that's a good idea. And watching episodes should be easy for at least American viewers, as fanpop AND CBS have all of them online. That would be fun. Maybe we could do it with some other Star Trek series as well, so that people can get a good varying star trek experience? I think it'd be cool to branch out to other series. Maybe we could find some people who are fans of the other series and they can pick out some of the better episodes, and explain what is going on?

That sounds like fun. I plan on getting the DVD straight after school on the day it comes out. I can't wait.
