I was reading an article on the sequel that's planned for 2011 and found this lovely bit of information:
"The story is said to be in the early stages of development, with the writing trio planning to take their cue from fan reaction to Star Trek. "With a franchise rebirth, the first movie has to be about origin. But with a second, you have the opportunity to explore incredibly exciting things," said Lindelof. "We'll be ambitious about what we'll do.""

Who else besides me is excited about this? They're planning by the reactions of the fans. That's us. It will work!

Yes, I believe I heard something like this. I hope they really mean what they say. And wouldn't it be awesome if when they were searching through fan things they just HAPPENED upon Home? Sigh. But then again, that would be wishful shipping; something I should not do.
I do, however, hope that they come across this website, and this movement, and are able to SEE the love.

Here, here. You know, I really do hope they mean it. Really, really.

If they really go by fan reaction, then Spock/Uhura is soooo over. Thank god.

Kind of like how the Fan Reaction to the movie Hellboy over the John/Lizzie/Hellboy love Triangle in the first movie? Maybe like John getting the boot in the Sequel of Hellboy, maybe S/U will get the boot for Star Trek (And head to the Antarctic) :p
But of Course the last time I had hope for a sequel being better than the first movie, I ended up with Transformers 2. >_<

Sometimes the sequels are okay. For instance, my sister and I watched Sister Act 2 last night, and it was great!
Or like Terminator 2, I love Terminator 2 more than I like the first one.
But the Third? And the Fourth? Bleh...

Batman: TDK was a sequel, and it most certainly did not suck!

I have to say--is it just me being biased (which I obviously very much am), or is it predominantly the nu!Trekkies (i.e., the ones that hadn't watched TOS) who are shipping Spock/Uhura?

Yeah, they are. And they don't want to watch TOS or even respect it either, which is annoying to no end.
But I am also very biased in believing that the people who are shipping S/U are also Twilight Fans who like love stories that have no plot or chemistry and like to say that we should respect a women just because she is in a relationship with a super awesome guy.And if you try to point out anything wrong with the pairing they automatically jump to 'YOUR JUST JEALOUS!'
or in S/U's case 'YOUR JUST RACISTS!'

Oh, dear god. Yep, have heard that. Come on, people, that's just as bad as if we K/S shippers were like "WELL IF YOU DON'T SHIP SPORK YOU HATE GAYS OLOLOLOLOL." *headdesk*
Okay, I'm going to say that I like nu!Uhura (TOS!Uhura goes without saying). I really do. If you take her too seriously, she can come off a bit bitchy (darling, I'd really love to hear you tell the crew of the Farragut to their face why you didn't want to serve with them, even though I understand perfectly and would probably have done the same). But she would make such an amazing friend--I feel that she would protect the people she loves to the death, and will stand up for things when she feels it isn't logically right. This isn't to say that sometimes I'd disagree with what is logically right (who touches a touch-telepath under emotional distress? really?), but I like and respect her for that.
Although I do make a distinction between nu!Trekkies who saw the movie and then promptly went back to watch TOS, and the nu!Trekkies who are like SCREW TOS, XI IS TEH CANON. I freely confess to being a nu!Trekkie, but at least I'm watching TOS.

Good for you! TOS is like history and I love learning about history. Some of the things they did on that show they where the first to do, and inspired many afterward. Its actually a lot of fun ^^ I can only hope that it inspires others to realize what they should've done in the movie, and what they should do in the next.

I'm a racist because I don't like S/U? Really? Am I racist against Vulcans cause...Uhura and I share similar skin tones (if not countries of origin), and I can't fault her for who she dates. I just think the ship was poorly done in the movie. Does that make me racist? *feels mildly offended*
I know, I find it funny that a show and movie series that promotes Unity and peace through Tolerance and Love, can still create ignorant fangirls that will bite your head off if you disagree with them.

Just my two cents.
Fanwars= problematic. Shippingwars=problematic. New Trekkies vs Old Trekkies=problematic. Us vs Them=problematic. Cos really, all together we represent the entire fanbase. And we are a part of the whole.
Deep deep breaths, cos everyone's got their own agendas and stuff overlaps and people get all protective of their ships--emotionally compromised, even. So when we get bitten, don't bite back...or try not to. Much better to construct logical arguments. See where they are coming from that made them flash onto something such as racism (or genderism, or Xism). Assume they don't know where we are coming from either. And if they don't get it or are simply trolls or do not want to think about alternatives, then what can we do but carry on? Walk away! We don't have to win the argument, cos there isn't really a debate worth having, at that point.
Thankfully there are people who will support and talk about our favourite ships, because there are tons of places on the internet. And here, that's more evident than anywhere. If someone here supported S/U, it would be intolerant to flame them. We know how that feels, and it sucks. I had a similar *headdesk* this week regarding some very ill-conceived and less than logical arguments about same sex ships. I had to remind myself it was the internet, everyone has a right to an opinion, and made myself refer to Calico's internet drama thread to calm me down: http://www.seetreklove.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232. And I still wanted to vent. But that's what the BS thread is for.
But I think there ARE newer Trekkies looking at TOS, though they may look at it differently than those who saw TOS first. And those who liked TOS before and saw the movie might not necessarily be against the S/U pairing. As for a real life example, my friends are Trekkies and pro-LGBT, and two of five of us liked the Spock/Uhura pairing, some of us found it to be coming from nowhere, and I was confused (I was also sleep deprived, but that's another story). I don't think by liking the S/U they had suddenly changed their minds about supporting LGBT.
Stuff isn't always black and white, and when I see arguments presented in such a way its a bit of a turn off to me. Things get emotionally charged really fast, basically at the speed of a modem. Source material is good stuff, don't get me wrong, I'm all for going there. I would like to see some development, and references to the original stuff myself. But I also want to see them go beyond it, and its nice to know they are looking at the fanbase. Good stuff. Who knows, maybe the will find Home, or SEE.... or The Fever...or T'hy'la (why can't I ever spell that word!).
Anyway, I just wanted to defuse things a bit here and possibly steer things back. Perhaps I am being a little over sensitive (and if I've stepped on anyone's toes, sorry, certainly not meant to have). This thread started out with hope in the title and I want to get us back to that.
My personal confusion was that the new movie felt more like Star Wars than Star Trek. I love Star Wars too, but perhaps if they bring in some more writers, things will have the ST flavour.

I'm a nuTrekkie myself, as is my sister. I only don't approve of Spock/Uhura because, after watching TOS, I realized that there wasn't really any basis.
I will not bash S/U, because I like both characters. I simply like S/K better.
UPDATE: I read in an interview linked off of treckcore.com that not only are they planning the sequel, but the third installment as well. The site asked Orci if the writers were planning on linking the next two movies.
And that it won't be like Transformers 2.
I like and respect TOS Uhura, but I only like nuUhura. She could have been a lot better than just becoming the pointless love story in the second half of the movie. Doesn't anyone else feel that they are turning Uhura into an Elizabeth(From POTC) type character? Because trust me, the pointless love triangle is coming, and NuUhura is probably going to become more irritating and unrealistic.
I'm not worried about what the writers are going to do because they are at least Star Trek fans, I am worried what J.J is going to do. I'm afraid of going to STXII and tasting Star Wars again when I was expecting to taste Star Trek.

That's a valid concern, I guess. I didn't really notice the similarities because I haven't watched Star Wars in forever, and I never watched Star Trek before the new movie.
I really, really hope they don't turn Uhura into Elizabeth. God, that would be so annoying. :(

God you're telling me. And the second Spiderman was great as well. The third one ruined it for me. But all the LOTR films are amazing. Let's hope all three Star Treks are great too

I'm totally proud to admit to being nu!trekkie. Totally proud. I mean, everyone has to feel proud becoming a part of something branching generations and changing society and technology for the better over a few decades. Right? And I'm also a proud nu!trekkie U/S disliker. Just seemed rushed in the movie. Like a forced romance. Like with James and Galia. Kinda pointless. And I especially dislike it after watching TOS! Thus making K/S my OTP.
@Pirate College Graduate-Yeah. Spidey #3 sucked so bad that I couldn't watch all of it. I got so bored halfway through after renting it that I just stopped. :P
:D I am so happy that there are NuTrekkers out there that are getting into TOS and realizing what should take place in the next movie.
Aliens, the sequel to Alien was good, and I mean really good! The Aliens movies are also another fandom of mine. But the third and fourth movie I could have done without >_<
And yes, Spiderman 3 was horrible, And whats worst about it? They are making a fourth movie.

This is completely off topic, but hey, it's my forum. XD
I just watched the best interviews. One asked Zach and Chris how they built up the testosterone in their scenes, and the answer was "Thumb wars, arm wrestling, and staring contests." And before Zach could even finish saying 'contests,' he and Chris had a staring contest. It was adorable. :)
The other one was where they were talking about when they met and stuff.
Staring contests: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xus0gS2z0ic&feature=PlayList&p=295E90F9B41FD0EE&index=3

OMG thanks for providing the one with the staring contest! ;) You could cut that tension with a knife...
Haha Chris likes to make Will Ferrell jokes. "You win, you always do."
But it was like, he and Zach both decided at the exact same moment to do the staring contest. What are the odds? Guess they are just close like that!

If they really go by fan reaction, then Spock/Uhura is soooo over. Thank god.
Fortunately only a small percentage of people actually approve of S/U. It seems like the majority prefers Kirk/Spock (or neither...which is better than S/U) and hopefully the Spock/Uhura crap will end!

I just love them. They're awesome. ;)
I liked the Dark Knight. In fact, I like some sequels better then the first one, but those are few and far between. Let's hope for equal love for ST XIII.
I am looking at the world with my 'half-empty-glasses' at the moment so I have to ask the question.
Will the writers and J.J actually take all the opinions of all the fans? or just the ones that they want to hear? The last time I hoped for something, I ended up with Transformers 2 with annoying robots that made a controversy about racism (Has anyone else heard about that?)

Wow, I hadn't heard that. What happened?
Apparently the Two 'Twin' autobots have stirred up this claim. Since they act like black harmful black Stereotypes, can't read, and are designed to look a bit like monkeys. I just looked up 'Transformers 2 and Racism 'on Google and I got a lot of Movies reviews saying the same thing.
This guy here (http://movieblog.ugo.com/movies/is-transformers-2-racist) points out most of it along with some others, I like the bit about the female Gender at the end because if I thought that ST wasn't feminist enough, then compared to Transformers 2 it looks like a f-ing godsend.
