View Full Version : So, in theory, we want t-shirts, yes?
Well, if someone has to attempt to put together a design for one, what sorts of things would you guys want? I know the name, and maybe the web address. I don't want to make it too feminine, because that would not help our cause. I just need some brainstorming here to find out what would make people happy.

If we're going to do t-shirts, we should have a logo. Not just the name, but...something recognizable, simple, and interesting all at once.
I wish I could draw.
Anyway, we might be able to make such a logo match the site. Yes?
Or maybe just slogan shirts? Like United Way: they have shirts with the name and logo and stuff, and then they have the "Live United" shirts.
I guess first we'd have to decide on one, but...just tossing out ideas here.

I personally think it would be great if we had a few basic t-shirts with slogans, and then perhaps once we have the website design figured out, make some t-shirts based on those designs. For now, anything you've got, let's see it!

I think slogans/logos are a GREAT idea! Gets people asking. ;D Be a great way to get the word out. Wear them all the time wherever we go. Maybe have the website address? I really love this idea, it's a good way to unite the effort.
EDIT: Maybe we could have different shirt colors/logos for people on different areas of The Team? Like, red for artists, blue for writers, etc? ...XD! Redshirts...
Ah! I love the color ideas. That would certainly get people's attention.
For the logo, someone on the old forum (forgive me for not remembering who you were) mention having the logo be like an eye. Maybe have a little symbol in the pupil or something?

Hmm...eyes? Sounds okay. Maybe binoculars?
Not just t-shirts either. Like, we could have hats and bags (because it would be easier for me to show it off everywhere if it was a bag, but that's just me).

Plain old supporters should probably be white or black.
So would it be:
Supporter - white (or black)
Writer/Proofreader - blue
Artist - Red
Mod - Yellow
We could have certain coloured bars on there (or tiny symbols) that way we wouldn't have to switch badges. Like, if our insignia is an eye, we could have a blue eye and then the name of the job underneath, and the eye would have a red iris outlined by a blue iris for someone who writes and draws, and stuff like that? I only suggest it to save people confusion. It might get confusing to keep up with all those badges.
We need to decide on our logo soon, to help with things....
I'm thinking we're going to need a poll or something to decide on colors. And a logo. =/
If we had a logo, I could make a few cobbled together test images and we could vote on them.

Wow. I didn't realize the color idea would be so popular. Ah well. I hope I get accepted as a writer/proofreader/translator/translation proofreader, that way I can get a neato colored shirt. That is hopefully not red.
I support (ha!) the idea of supporters as the redshirts, since while they are integral, they're the most...how should I say...expendable? Of the crew. XDDD

SEE Staff has the following sections:
Mod
Writers
Proofreaders
Artists
Translators
Translation Proofers
Reasearch
Are we lumping all of the writers together?
Since out poor research person is all alone right now, we can put research with the mods.
Or we could do it:
Writers/Proofreaders - blue
Artists - red
Transltors/Translation Proofers - green (yes, I said green)
Mods/Researchers - yellow/gold
I said green cause:
1) It's a primary colour (green is one of the primary colours of light; yellow is one of the primary colours in...art)
2) I couldn't think of another colour
3) I like wearing blue
We could always keep them together and only have three colours (blue, red, yellow).
Thoughts? Anger? Funny faces?

I love the eye idea, but what about green? you're all leaving it out. Just a thought, but maybe have an option for just part of the shirt to be colored, maybe the collar and sleeves or something.
Also, I remember that some places do like mugs that have a picture on them when you add hot water, that could be cool.
And definitely bags, I tend to wear a lot of sweatshirts, so a bag or jacket option would be brilliant.
EDIT: ok, someone said green, I dont really mind what colour I am btw.

I like to keep it with yellow, blue, and red, since they're Star Trek uniform colors? /hahah, nerd reason, I know.
But if others like green, that's fine too. Or we could throw in SILVER...You know...since in TNG it was a uniform color...Wesley Crusher wore it for a while. I have no idea why, or even what rank it is. XD
Wait. Why do the artists have to be red? -amused-
This is hilarious, actually, because no one really wants to be red. XD

Nothing wrong with only part of the shirt being coloured (what would the base colour be? White?), I just thought it might be easier to find the coloured shirts.

Red has been given a bad name...but it's not all bad. TNG made red the colour to be. (Redshirts became goldshirts and continued to die.)(Though not as often, I think.)

Hey guys! Here are some thoughts about T-shirts.
The multi-colored shirts will only suffice if we end up with a large enough order of them. To my knowledge, shirts are cheaper when you have a larger order of them, correct? So if we were to do team shirts it'd probably be best to get some designs together, but hold off until we have gained a little bit more momentum. I would LOVE to do the multi-colored levels shirts if we have enough members on the team (which we have a good amount, but we still could use more).
As far as putting the website on there: yes, yes, and yes.
I would really like a t-shirt that would be kind of an "ad" shirt of sorts that says in big print on the front, like this
SEE
THE
LOVE
(maybe something kind of like the LOVE IS THE MOVEMENT t-shirts? -- google it if you don't know what I'm talking about)
or something to that effect. I think it would be something that would make eyebrow's raise and effectively get people asking questions. Thoughts?
Keep up the good work guys.

Hmm. The icon size seems about right...Especially since a lot of people will have upwards of three or four jobs.
Yes, we need to have the icons and the shirt back contrast as well, very important. Needs to be readable from a distance.

I think the icon size is good. Not too small or big. We would need to make them look super simple. Well, I'm gonna go try to spread the word around.
I like how the LOVE IS THE MOVENT shirt is. Will that leave enough room for logo?
Well, if we got big enough, we could always go for booths at conventions...But that's thinking really far ahead.
How many shirts are we thinking we'll need? These (http://instashirt.com/pricelist/Value_tee.htm) are a better price, but I'd need to know how many, what colors, etc, to even get a ballpark of how much cash we'd need.

@Fawkes: We decided to give separate colours for staff divisions, t-shirt wise. Staff shirts had symbols relating to their tasks on the back, the SEE logo and stuff on front.
Then we decided to wait on those until we had either more Staff or more Support, or both.

I like T-shirts. Someone make some, and I'll definitely wear one. Plus it'll double as advetising--people will see it and ask questions. It'll kill two birds with one stone. I know we already have a CafePress account, but we need to make some merch to put up there.
Ideas for shirts:
We need team shirts for our writers, artists, mods, etc.
We could put the verticle art that's on the front page down one side of the shirt [w/o the 'sign the petition' part].
A simple SEE It or similar message on the front with our eye logo on the back or sleeve.
We really need a short, concise mission statement we can put on these things. Like a tagline. Anyone good with advertising?

We already discussed team shirts. (I'm too lazy to quote myself, so just know that Red=Artists, Green-Trans/transproofers, Blue=writers/proofers, yellow=mods, research, administration. So far anyway. Now that there's further departmental division, we might have to expand on that. Anyway, I'll find that post later, when I'm not feeling lazy.)
Vertical art sounds like a good idea.
I like your idea for shirts. Though...I've never been fully comfortable in a T-shirt with art down one side while the other-side is artless. Maybe we could do mirror art? Like, art down both sides and message in the middle; mission statement type thing on the back, logo on the back or sleeves?
Also, if we do decide on a cartoon type thing (discussion in another thread) we could do somthing similar, with the mission statement on the back or under whatever slogan or just the pic?
Did that make sense?
And we could have others with just the logo and the mission statement (or something like that).
All ideas come with website placement mentioned earlier in the thread.

Yes, I remember reading that on here. The point is that someone actually needs to make them. [Preferably without Comic Sans lettering.]

You mean the cyclops thing? I saw a thread talking about that...

I think that a bunch of different shirt designs could be made using cafepress, so there can be just a standard SEE shirt, maybe SEE Trek specifically, team shirts, ect. I don't think it costs anything to put one up for sale. I am not an expert, but I think that you make different designs and are charged individually.
Here is a bit of info on the shops, which would be where you sell everything:
"What CafePress.com does
1. Gives you a FREE online shop to promote your products
2. Produces each item when ordered using our unique print-on-demand technology
3. Handles all payment transactions including major credit cards
4. Ships your products worldwide
5. Manages all returns/exchanges
6. Offers customer service via toll-free phone and email
7. Sends you a monthly check for your earnings on sales! "
I think with shops, you take the price of the shirt, then add to it for profit.
There are two types of shops; basic, which is free, and then premium, which has a price per month "as low as $4.99".
"Basic Shops
With our Basic Shop you have the ability to sell over 80 products in a simple one-page shop.
Again our Basic Shops are free of charge. You can open as many as you need. Basic Shops are the simple and easy way to start selling with CafePress.com."
"Premium Shops
Premium Shops are for those shopkeepers serious about making money! You'll have the ability to create a custom shopping experience with unlimited selection of products and multi-level pages. All for less than what you spend on lunch."

Well...I brought up the cyclops, but there's potential for other things there (Elle suggested a cat-monkey, I suggested the cyclops). That discussion is still ongoing.
Part of the reason we haven't made them is because of the evil fickle device called "money" that (if I remember correctly) we don't have enough of. We want the shirts, and we'll get them eventually, but we can't afford it quite yet. (If I'm wrong, someone correct me.)
And I think first we need to decide on general support shirts, because there are people here that aren't team and we don't want to leave them out, especially if we're going to profit off of this.
((Generally I dislike Comic Sans in large batches of text. In small doses it's alright, but in giant paragraphs it's a bit dizzying.))
EDIT:: Thank you Mandy, I didn't know all of that.

Perhaps we can include the eye we've been using? Maybe, to catch people's eye and to generally have a cool shirt, we could think about using some of the art on the main page? That's pretty cool artwork, eye-catching... We have to think about creating a shirt that will be cool to wear AND get the site and info out there.

So....:
T-Shirt Ideas: (for SEE Support)
black/white
-- Logo/slogan & web address
-- Art (that's on our main page) down side (one or both?), sans "sign the petition"
-- Cute character/slogan & web adress
--Mini-mission (maybe?) "SEE: Supporting Social Equality in Mainstream Media"
((I'm pulling these from all over the thread. Someone, if I missed something, help me out!!!))
Going by what Mandy's said, we can sell t-shirts without worrying too much about funding because the site charges per shirt(?)(meaning, the price of making the shirt is included in the price of the shirt when sold)(yes?). If so, all we need to do is decide on the shirts that we're selling and finalize designs.
I'm still firmly of the opinion that we should wait to do team shirts until we have a wider base/more momentum. I think we should start with SEE Support shirts first, and then - after we've been around a while - start selling SEE Staff shirts.
((That's part of the reason I only brought up SEE Support shirts in my mini-list. I am only one person making a list to try and keep things organized because the thread is getting a little long. My word is not final; I'm just tossing out ideas. I can be easily over ruled or ignored.))
If you think we should do team shirts first we can.
(::On a random slogan idea front::) "I am SEE Support" or "I Support SEE" as a slogan for a SEE Support shirt?
So...Yes? No? Comments? Suggestions? Screams? Flying Fruit? Funny Faces? Pitchforks?

I kind of have a concern about using a character on the shirts/with SEE.
I'm not sure if it'd really be an issue, but I'm wondering if we used a cute character on the shirts, would people see the character and disregard the text? I think having the text alone might make more of an impact/look more professional. >.<; that's just my opinion though, and I might be worried over nothing.
